What is a Dalmatic?
Several members have asked me about the new vestments that
I wear. As Saint Paul's has never had a permanent deacon (as
far as I know) it was suggested that I write an article about
the deacon's dalmatic. We are all familiar with the similar garment
that our priests and bishop wear called a chausuble. Deacons
wear vestments in all liturgies including the alb and the distinctive
deacon's stole which angles over the left shoulder.
The focus of this article is the damatic, the outer garment
of deacons in the Western Church. The first dalmatics were made
of white Dalmatian (from Croatia) wool, hence the name. Over
the centuries the dalmatic evolved from a strictly white wool
vestment to silk and later to other fabrics and colors with varying
ornamentation. Now the dalmatic typically matches or complements
the Eucharistic vestments and altar frontal. The dalmatic will
match the Liturgical color for the season. The distintive parts
of a dalmatic include wide sleeves and colored bands about the
cuffs, shoulders and/or chest.
Deacons may wear a dalmatic at all celebrations of the Eucharist
and on other solemn occations including Evensong. It is my custome
to wear the dalmatic when the priest or bishop wears the chausuble.

Communities in Schools: CIS continues to ask for food
or donations of money throughout the school year. All money donated
goes directly to purchase food. No funds are used to support
or pay staff. The food that we collect here at Saint Paul's is
then delivered to their offices located on the campus at Northside
Elementary. In addition, if anyone would like to donate their
time to either deliver the food (weekly or less often to the
Northside office) or help pack backpacks, please speak to Deacon
Ken. This is a very FUN activity that we get to do! God has blessed
us to be able to help out with this ministry. |
