Living in Ordinary Time
The
Church season after the feast of Pentecost to the beginning of Advent
is called the season of Pentecost or ordinary time. It reminds us that
we live in the here and now and that the Holy Spirit is always
with us. The Holy Spirit remains with us throughout our lives to stir
us up, comfort us, guard, and guide us. No matter who we are, what we
are doing, or where we are-God in the form of the Holy Spirit is with
us and will not let go of us. God the Spirit connects us to each other,
to God the Creator, God the Son and to the rest of the world.
The importance of connection comes to mind for me when I visit a place
like the Ruby Marshes. It is easy to observe the circle of life by
watching the interaction among the plant life, the animal life and
humans. We, who are omnivorous will attempt to eat most anything-fish,
fowl, mammals, insects, plants, etc. However, some of the animals we eat
need certain plantlife/insect life to grow.
Dan
and I noticed on our trip through burned areas around Harrison Pass
that there were no animals. The animals-deer, antelope, rabbits,
birds, coyotes, etc. were in the areas which were green and growing.
They were in the places where they could find food and shelter. That
would be where we too need to be to find food.
Fire,
drought, war and flood mean disturbance of our connections with the
rest of God's creation and yet the promise of new life with the Holy
Spirit is here with the beginning of grass greening after the fire.
Habitat is beginning to return and the Spirit reconnects us.
